These books--or rather, some of them--are worthy of the effort and the time spent on their perusal; I leave it to the reader to decide whether the publication of another study is justified or not, but I would like to explain how it came to be written. Having left the U.S.S.R. in the summer Of 1920, my personal impressions cover only the first three years of the new regime. Later I had the opportunity of meeting many people who had either just left the U.S.S.R. or had visited it in order to study its economic and social system. In 1922, having resumed my academic studies in Prague and having access to the abundant material received directly from the U.S.S.R. by the Russian Historical Archive, the Institute of Russian Studies, and the Russian Economic Study Centre of Prof S. N. Prokopovich in Prague, I began to follow the development of the economic processes which were taking place in my native country. Many well-known Russian economists, sociologists and former statesmen worked in these institutions, whose object was to study developments in the U.S.S.R. From 1927 to 1939, as a member of the Russian Economic Study Centre of Prof. Prokopovich, and using the plentiful data regularly received there from the U.S.S.R., I contributed monthly articles on the development of industry, home and foreign trade, State finance and some other aspects of the national economy of the U.S.S.R. to the Bulletin of the Russian Economic Study Centre of Prof. S. N. Prokopovich, published in Prague, and later also memoranda for the Czech State Statistical Institute. From 1935 to April 1939 I lectured on the development of the national economy and economic system of the U.S.S.R. in the Faculty of Commerce of the Czech Technical University of Prague. Years of study of the economic development of Russia and of the Soviet Government's economic policy have time and again forced upon me the conclusion that the appreciation of current economic events and measures, by myself as well as by other authors, was liable to be wrong, when these events and measures were considered in isolation and not in association with the general course of development of the entire national economy of the U.S.S.R.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Soviet Union</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic policy.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="2">ddc</subfield><subfield code="c">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="999" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="c">306</subfield><subfield code="d">306</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="0">0</subfield><subfield code="1">0</subfield><subfield code="2">ddc</subfield><subfield code="4">0</subfield><subfield code="7">1</subfield><subfield code="8">AT</subfield><subfield code="a">JB</subfield><subfield code="b">JB</subfield><subfield code="d">2017-02-21</subfield><subfield code="l">0</subfield><subfield code="o">338.947 BAY</subfield><subfield code="p">G-11412</subfield><subfield code="r">2017-02-21 00:00:00</subfield><subfield code="w">2017-02-21</subfield><subfield code="y">BK</subfield><subfield code="z">Amalesh Tripathi Collection</subfield></datafield></record></collection>

In the course of the last quarter of a century, hundreds of volumes have been written about the economic system of the U.S.S.R. and various aspects of it. These books--or rather, some of them--are worthy of the effort and the time spent on their perusal; I leave it to the reader to decide whether the publication of another study is justified or not, but I would like to explain how it came to be written.
