A poet well versed in Sanskrit, Persian, and Hindi--all of which enrich his work--Bharatchandra took up the literary performance genre maṅgalkāvya and thoroughly transformed it, addressing the aesthetic tastes of the court rather than of the traditional village audience. He added depth and sensitivity to well-known legends, along with allusions to his own experiences of poverty, and more than a dash of mischievous wit. The first volume narrates Annada's origins, including the building of her city and temple under Shiva's direction and the spread of her worship, and incorporates praise of his patron, the Nadia royal family. This translation, the first into English, accompanies the original text in the Bangla script. Lively and entertaining, In Praise of Annada was regarded as a major achievement in its own time and remains a treasure of Bengali literature.--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by publisher</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English and Bengali;</subfield><subfield code="b">Bangla script.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Devotional literature.</subfield><subfield code="9">9245</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bhattacharya, France,</subfield><subfield code="e">translator.</subfield><subfield code="9">9246</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Bhāratacandra Rāẏa,</subfield><subfield code="d">1712-1760.</subfield><subfield code="t">Annadāmaṅgala.</subfield><subfield code="i">Container of (expression):</subfield><subfield code="9">9247</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Bhāratacandra Rāẏa,</subfield><subfield code="d">1712-1760.</subfield><subfield code="t">Annadāmaṅgala.</subfield><subfield code="l">English</subfield><subfield code="i">Container of (expression):</subfield><subfield code="9">9248</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Murty classical library of India ;</subfield><subfield code="v">12.</subfield><subfield code="9">9240</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="942" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="2">udc</subfield><subfield code="c">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="952" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="0">0</subfield><subfield code="1">0</subfield><subfield code="2">udc</subfield><subfield code="4">0</subfield><subfield code="6">9454092RAY</subfield><subfield code="7">0</subfield><subfield code="9">36794</subfield><subfield code="a">CSSSC</subfield><subfield code="b">CSSSC</subfield><subfield code="d">2024-10-23</subfield><subfield code="e">Gifted by Partha Chatterjee.</subfield><subfield code="l">0</subfield><subfield code="o">94(540.92)RAY</subfield><subfield code="p">G-8058</subfield><subfield code="r">2024-10-23 00:00:00</subfield><subfield code="w">2024-10-23</subfield><subfield code="y">BK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="999" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="c">33319</subfield><subfield code="d">33319</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
